5 Tips to Choose the Right Windows for Hurricane Season

bookeditor, June 20, 2024June 20, 2024

Preparing your home for hurricane season is essential for protecting your property and ensuring the safety of your family.

Windows are particularly vulnerable to the high winds and flying debris associated with hurricanes, so selecting the right windows is a critical step in safeguarding your home. Here are five key tips to help you choose the right windows for hurricane season.

Opt for Impact-Resistant Windows

One of the most effective ways to protect your home during a hurricane is to install impact resistant windows. These windows are designed to withstand the forces of hurricane winds and flying debris, thanks to their laminated glass construction.

Laminated glass consists of two layers of glass with a tough interlayer that holds the glass together even if it breaks, preventing shards from flying into your home. Impact-resistant windows not only offer physical protection but also provide additional benefits such as noise reduction, UV protection, and increased security.

Evaluate the Window Frame Materials

The material of the window frames plays a significant role in their ability to withstand hurricane conditions. Vinyl, aluminum, wood, and fiberglass are the most common materials used for window frames, each offering unique advantages.

Vinyl frames are durable, low-maintenance, and resistant to moisture and rot, making them a popular choice. However, while vinyl is energy-efficient, it might not be as strong as other materials in extreme conditions. Aluminum frames are known for their strength and resistance to corrosion, which is particularly beneficial in coastal areas.

Consider Window Style and Design

The style and design of your windows can significantly impact their performance during a hurricane. Different window styles provide varying levels of protection and functionality.

Casement windows, which are hinged at the side and open outward, offer a tight seal that can withstand strong winds and often come with multi-point locking systems for added security. Double-hung windows, featuring two sashes that slide vertically, provide ventilation but may not offer the same level of storm resistance as casement or fixed windows.

Assess Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a crucial factor when selecting windows for hurricane season. Hurricanes and extreme weather can impact your home’s insulation, leading to increased energy consumption.

Look for windows that enhance energy efficiency through features such as Low-E (Low Emissivity) Glass, which is coated to reflect infrared heat, reducing heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. Consider windows with double or triple glazing, which consist of multiple layers of glass separated by air or gas-filled spaces. They will provide better installation.

Verify Installation and Maintenance Requirements

Proper installation is essential to the effectiveness of hurricane-resistant windows. Ensure that your windows are installed by a certified professional who follows the manufacturer’s guidelines and local building codes. Improper installation can compromise the window’s performance, leading to leaks, air infiltration, and reduced protection. Consider the window replacement and maintenance requirements of the option/s you choose as well. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning tracks, inspecting seals, and lubricating moving parts, helps maintain the functionality and longevity of your windows.
